Letter from an irrate motorist

Aug 26

To Mr. Fernando and all officials of the MMDA,

The new traffic scheme of putting up pink road dividers from Robinson’s Metro East to Sta. Lucia is the most stupid traffic strategy to date.

Instead of its supposed “objective” to decongest the traffic in the area, it only made matters worse. All vehicles are trying to squeeze their way on the right most lane just to get to the malls, or pick up passengers, or turn right to Felix Ave. while the other lane is filled with useless asphalt. Gone are the days were smooth sailing driving along Marcos Hi-way is a certainty during off-peak hours and weekends. Traffic now is even worse before the u-turn scheme was even implemented.

Instead of fragile pink fences and orange barricades, why won’t you spend all your money hiring people to either train all the notorious drivers in the country or security cameras to document all violations on the spot? I had a group who made an ANPR if it means anything. Oh and yeah, separate lanes for motorcycles would be of much help too.

Sincerely,

Risha Lopez

  1. i agree with investing the money into something else rather than knee-jerk infrastructures then demolish them later when things don’t go as planned and expected. Stiffer penalties and effective monitoring tools and gadgets can also be excellent combo. But there is another angle – implementation and implementing agency’s integrity.

  2. I agree. Hi-tech equipment and strict traffic rules will still be useless due to lax implementation.

Daily commuting wouldn’t be much of a problem if all motorists are conscious enough to adhere to all traffic rules. Another rant I would love to write about if only I have time…

  3. i drive through marcos highway daily and i actually feel that i’ve been getting home faster than ever (going to school is another story though – cainta-katips route). before, marcos highway traffic starts from katips and marcos bridge, now it ‘starts’ way after ligaya – and traffic isn’t even that heavy, slow pero bearable.

pero: going to katips naman is hell. and yeah, it’s more of a motorist-problem. lalo na sa u-turn slots. XD
